Anthropic raised $65 billion in investment at a post-money valuation of $965 billion, approaching a potential IPO. The new funding round could be the final stage of private capital raising for the AI startup before going public.
The Series H round was led by Altimeter Capital, Dragoneer, Greenoaks, Sequoia Capital, Capital Group, Coatue, and D1 Capital Partners. Institutional investors also participated in the deal, including Baillie Gifford, Blackstone, Brookfield, D.E. Shaw Ventures, DST Global, and Fidelity Management & Research.
Additionally, strategic infrastructure partners Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron took part in the round. Part of the investment had already been confirmed, including $5 billion from Amazon announced in April.
Previously, Anthropic was close to closing a $50 billion round, with investor interest in the deal being extremely high. One institutional investor, according to the publication, was willing to invest up to $5 billion just for access to the company.
Anthropic plans to use the raised funds to develop research in model safety and interpretability, expand computing power for Claude, and scale products and partnerships.
On the day of the round announcement, the company also unveiled the new Claude Opus 4.8 model, which improves capabilities in agentic tasks, programming, and self-correction. Certain cybersecurity-level models are currently being distributed limitedly due to security risks.
Anthropic is demonstrating rapid revenue growth: according to the company, its annualized revenue exceeded $47 billion, and analysts expect further growth amid expansion in the corporate segment. The company competes with OpenAI in the race for capital and development ahead of a future IPO. OpenAI previously raised $122 billion at a valuation of $852 billion. Plans for other major players, including SpaceX and xAI, to go public are also being discussed in the industry.
