Seven Secrets to Successful Fundraising
1. Laser Focus
Investors look for founders who are fully focused on their startup. To build a truly great startup and scale it, hire a team, create a product, and increase sales, the founders' attention is essential.
As one investor who invested in seven unicorns notes, “if the founder is working on multiple projects simultaneously, it reduces the chances of the startup’s success and, consequently, its ability to secure investment.” At least 80% of your time should be dedicated to your own startup.
2. Start as a Side Hustle
Before dedicating yourself fully to the project, work on it as a side hustle. Study the market, niches, and competitors, write code for the platform—even if only on weekends. It is also recommended to have 6–12 months of personal savings so that you are not dependent on external funding in the early stages.
3. Seek “Smart Capital”
In the early stages, look for investors who not only provide money but also understand your project and your work. These can be acquaintances or colleagues, Angels who have expertise in your sector and are willing to support the startup financially and mentally. Such investors will help you grow faster and more safely, and in addition to investments, they will also help you find pilot clients, partners, and hire your first employees.
4. Grow Through Bootstrapping and Grants
First, maximize the use of your own resources (“bootstrapping”). Securing your first paying customers is critical for attracting angel investors. In the UK, for example, there are Smart Grants from UK Innovate—funds that do not require giving up equity in your business, helping you grow before seeking external investment. Look for any grants and methods to advance your startup on your own as far as possible; the further you get, the higher your valuation will be in the first Pre-Seed round.
5. Participate in Competitions and Accelerators
Competitions, startup battles, and accelerators provide not only money and grants but also visibility, networking opportunities, and motivation. I have portfolio companies that pitched at a major conference; they not only won a $5,000 prize but also, after the battle, were approached by the head of innovation at a large bank, who later became their client. You never know who is sitting in the audience as a listener, so always give it your all.
I always advise startups to consider participating in accelerators; for example, participation in Techstars London helped startups feel the competitive environment and find partners and investors.
6. Build a Strong Team
In the early stages, success depends on the team. Finding professionals is difficult, so it is important to pay attention to this from the very beginning. Accelerators, co-founder meetups, and professional communities can help you find the right people. Even if you are just starting out, start looking at good specialists; immediately after securing investment, you will already have a list of candidates.
7. Start with Your First Customers and Community
Immediately build a community of users and so-called ambassadors—they help test the product and provide feedback. Do not delay working with customers until the product is fully ready. In Islamic FinTech, for example, many startups failed due to incorrectly identifying their first users.
Additional Tips
It is important to approach money wisely. Do not raise too much capital too early to avoid losing control of the company. Keep an eye on your cap table and choose investors with whom it is comfortable to work for many years.
I also advise trusting your intuition: if something seems wrong in the contract or investment terms, it is better to walk away.
And finally, inspiration: founder motivation is not just about money, but the desire to create something valuable, improve the world, and leave a legacy. It is this strong “why” that helps overcome the difficulties and loneliness of a startup founder.
