How to Get Into Google: Certifications, Summer of Code, and Internships
We have compiled Google programs through which you can start a career at the company or take courses — from online courses to paid open-source work. Some are designed for beginners and require no prior preparation, while others assume programming skills and involve a competitive selection process. We examine who is accepted into each program and what timelines to expect.
Google Career Certificates
Format: online, Coursera platform
A professional course program built around six core areas: Data Analytics, Project Management, Cybersecurity, Digital Marketing & E-commerce, IT Support, and UX Design. Additionally, there are three advanced courses: Advanced Data Analytics, Business Intelligence, and IT Automation with Python. No prior preparation is required, and the average completion time is three to six months with a workload of less than 10 hours per week. In the US and Canada, the subscription costs $49 per month after a seven-day free trial; in other countries, the price may be lower, with the final amount displayed by Coursera during registration. According to a graduate survey conducted by Google in the US in 2025, more than 70% of participants reported a positive career change within six months of completing the course.
Google AI Professional Certificate
Format: online, Coursera platform
A standalone course on applied artificial intelligence: data analysis, research, content generation, planning, and vibe coding. No experience is required, and the program consists of practical assignments. Upon registration, participants receive three months of access to the Google AI Pro subscription, which then renews at the standard price of $19.99 per month.
Google Summer of Code
A program in which Google funds work on open-source projects under the guidance of mentors. In 2026, it took place for the 22nd time, with 185 communities serving as mentors. Since its launch in 2005, more than 22,000 participants from 123 countries have gone through the program. Student status is not required. Projects are designed for approximately 90, 175, or 350 hours of work and span from eight to 22 weeks, as agreed upon with the mentor. Stipends depend on the size of the project and the country of residence and are recalculated based on purchasing power parity: for small projects, the base rate is $1,500 (ranging from $750 to $1,650); for medium projects, $3,000 (ranging from $1,500 to $3,300); and for large projects, $6,000 (ranging from $3,000 to $6,600). Payment is made in two installments after the midterm and final evaluations—first 45%, then 55%. In the 2026 season, applications were accepted from March 16 to March 31, the list of accepted participants was published on April 30, and the development period ran from May 25 to November 2.
Google Internships
Location: offices worldwide
Internships cover development, artificial intelligence and machine learning research, business areas, and design. Recruitment timelines, educational requirements, and available locations vary by region and change from season to season, so conditions should be reviewed in the specific job posting.
Early Career Programs and Apprenticeships
In addition to internships, Google offers two separate tracks: early career for recent graduates, and apprenticeships with on-the-job training. Recruitment cycles open irregularly, so it is best to follow them via email notifications on the website.
Full-Time Positions
All open roles are published in the general jobs section with filters for location, area, and level. Applications can be submitted for no more than three positions within a 30-day period. For US listings, the company provides a salary range.
