Hong Kong as a gateway to China

International startups should consider Hong Kong as their first entry point because Hong Kong is uniquely positioned as a "Super Connector" and "Super Value-Adder".

Hong Kong offers an international, investor-ready environment with real advantages in capital, governance, and cross-border business. For example, Hong Kong is one of the world's top three international financial centres and the largest offshore RMB hub. It is also recognised as the world's No. 1 cross-boundary wealth management centre, ranked No. 1 globally in economic freedom, and features an open and efficient business environment with a simple and low tax regime and no capital controls or foreign exchange restrictions.

In addition, Hong Kong is a major global landing zone for growth: it was ranked the world's third-largest destination for global foreign direct investment and fifth-largest merchandise trade entity. Last year, Hong Kong also reached record highs in the number of non-local companies and start-ups, reflecting strong business confidence.

More importantly, Hong Kong is also China's only common law jurisdiction and the only bilingual common law jurisdiction where both Chinese and English are used in proceedings. International startups benefit from familiar, robust rule-of-law foundations, including strong IP protection and an international financial ecosystem that gives investors and partners confidence.

Common mistakes when entering China

Underestimating regulatory and data requirements.
Plan for regulatory alignment early. In cross-border innovation, "trust" in data sharing, clinical validation, and safety evidence is often the foundation before investors and adopters can move. 

Trying to scale without a credible pilot or proof package.
Use pilots to generate the evidence needed for partnerships and first customers — do not jump straight to mass go-to-market. 

Moving too fast without operational readiness across the boundary.
Make sure you can execute — talent, materials, timelines, and cross-border processes — so your pilot does not stall. 

Finally, my advice would be: choose partners and platforms that help you move from concept to execution, because in China, speed comes from preparation, not shortcuts.
