10 AI companies that are being talked about in 2026
In April, Forbes released its eighth annual AI 50 list—a selection of the most promising private companies in the field of artificial intelligence. We examine the top ten and explain what each company does and why it made the ranking.
OpenAI — the largest company on the list by a wide margin. The GPT model family and the ChatGPT product have defined what the general public understands as artificial intelligence. As of early 2026, annual revenue exceeded $25 billion. A valuation of $182.6 billion makes OpenAI the most valuable private AI company in the world.
Anthropic — the only leading laboratory for which AI safety is a foundational principle, not an afterthought. The company was founded by former OpenAI researchers. As of early 2026, revenue reached $30 billion on an annualized basis. The Claude model family, which includes Claude Haiku, Sonnet, and Opus, serves developers, businesses, and consumers, while Claude Code has become a serious competitor in the agentic coding category.
Mistral AI — the flagship of European ambitions in artificial intelligence. Its open-source models have attracted corporate clients ranging from Cisco to European government agencies, where its French roots and compliance with local regulations are significant advantages in an era of heightened focus on data sovereignty.
Cohere — firmly occupies the corporate niche in the foundational models market. It is almost entirely focused on large corporate clients who require private deployment, data residency guarantees, and models fine-tuned on their own data without transferring it to a third-party cloud. This approach has enabled the company to build deep relationships with financial institutions, healthcare systems, and other regulated industries.
Reflection — builds open-source models. They are positioned as a competitive alternative to Chinese AI labs, including DeepSeek. The company has become one of the new entrants in the ranking in the foundational models and AI research category.
Safe Superintelligence — takes a longer-term view and focuses on the research necessary to create future AI systems that are reliably safe at the level of artificial general intelligence.
Thinking Machines Lab — one of the most talked-about new laboratories. It is led by former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati. The company leverages Murati’s deep experience at the forefront of development for research and applied AI products.
Databricks — the oldest company on the list and one of the most valuable. For over a decade, it has been building data storage, analytics, and processing infrastructure that enterprises use to manage their most valuable asset — data. Its unified lakehouse platform has become the default architecture for companies that need to store and process large volumes of data before feeding it into AI systems.
Crusoe — builds data centers for artificial intelligence powered by sustainable energy sources. It positions itself as the preferred compute provider for organizations with ESG commitments alongside significant AI workloads.
SambaNova — has gone further than any other AI infrastructure company by creating specialized AI chips alongside a full-stack deployment platform. This is a vertically integrated bet on the idea that the best performance requires specialized silicon, not general-purpose GPUs.
